Moving on a race day
Royal Randwick sits on the suburb's western edge, and when it races, the streets around it stop being ordinary streets. Most Sydney movers find that out at 7am with a truck and nowhere to put it. Locals check the calendar first.
What actually changes on a race day
Special-event clearways come into force on the roads serving the course, most noticeably Alison Road and stretches of Anzac Parade, and parking that is legal on an ordinary Saturday becomes a tow-away zone. On the big carnival days the effect spreads: crowd traffic loads the whole corridor, buses and the light rail run full, and side streets near the course fill with racegoers' cars exactly when your truck wanted the kerb.
The current racing calendar and event-day traffic arrangements are published by the Australian Turf Club and Transport for NSW respectively; if your move date is a Saturday in spring or autumn, two minutes checking is cheap insurance.
Which moves it touches
- Anything fronting the clearway roads: a move on Alison Road or nearby on a race morning needs its truck plan rethought, sometimes just to the side street, sometimes to a different start time.
- North Randwick and the Junction: not inside the clearways, but the traffic and the parked crowd reach them on carnival days.
- Everywhere else, barely: Coogee, Maroubra and the south of the suburb mostly shrug. The drive routes just avoid the corridor for a few hours.
How we schedule around it
When we book a move near the course we check the race calendar, the same way we check strata lift rules and permit zones: access is the job. Sometimes the answer is an earlier start, loaded and gone before the clearways bite. Sometimes it is the side-street kerb and a slightly longer carry. Occasionally it is the honest suggestion that Sunday would cost you fewer hours than Saturday. What it never is, on our jobs, is a surprise.
